Thetford Aqua Magic Style II leaking

I woke up the other night camping in Bryce. When I stepped off the foot of the bed to head to the bathroom, I felt water under my feet. After some quick checking, I discovered that the toilet bowl was full and overflowing onto the floor. I quickly flushed the toilet which emptied it immediately. Fortunately, it had only been running a short time and water was just starting to reach the furnace vents.

I assumed that the flush valve was letting water into the bowl. I watched it carefully and didn't see any water flowing after emptying the bowl. But I didn't want to take a chance. So, I went outside and turned off the city water. I have a pressure regulator installed - so I don't think it is the result of excess water pressure.

I feel like I should replace the valve or the toilet. I don't think I can keep the toilet it as-is and leave the water on with confidence knowing that this happened. If I was asleep for an entire night or left the trailer unattended for several hours, this could do significant damage. Has anyone experienced a toilet leaking in this fashion?

I find the Thetford Aqua Magic Style II to be a very troublesome toilet. I have received dozens of calls with the complaint being the pedal does not return to the full up position and the water continues to run. I have only limited success replacing the water valve. Within a few weeks or months I get called back out to work on it again. My suggestion is to replace this toilet with a Thetford Aqua Magic Style Plus with the center pedal flush and the china bowl. This one is about $75 to $100 more but is a much better toilet. Make sure you have enough room behind the existing toilet because the Thetford Aqua Magic Style Plus takes a little more room. If you can't do this, don't fix the one you have, replace it with a new one.

X2. I am on my 4th Style II in 7 years full time. One flood as described above caused the first replacement. As a habit now I always pull up on the flush pedal with my toe after each flush. I would have upgraded to the Style Plus, but I don't have enough room behind it at the top. I found a Style II on sale earlier this year and bought it for when the current one ***** out (pun intended). This failure will be when, not if. The Style II is not a high quality item IMHO, but it does have a china bowl.
  • After the second occurrence of the valve not closing completely and overflowing the bowl, I tossed the POS out and replaced it with a Dometic 320. Best decision ever!
  • I had the same problem last year when I dewinterized. I bought a new flush valve kit from a local RV dealer and installed it and the problem was fixed. I think the seals in the flush valve were drying out and passing. We haven't had a problem since.
  • I would replace the valve but also, I always install a valve in the water supply line so I can shut the toity down if there's a problem (just like at home). Came in handy on our last RV when the toilet tried to do the same thing yours did.
  • Something similar happened to me - I replaced the valve which fixed the problem. I tend to use the water pump these days - it makes noise but that same noise comes in handy when you have a plumbing leak.

  • I know it's a hassle but some people, including myself, use the city water only to fill the fresh water tank and pump from it for utility uses. This would have prevented the problem you had.
