Toilet not holding water

I'm on a roll with needed fixes. I had the toilet seal inspected when I had the camper winterized. The guy said it looked good and had held the water/anti freeze for a couple weeks while they waited for a part on a different issue.
It was dry when I went to de-winterize. Now since getting thugs set up its not holding water. I cleaned really well (it was already clean). I rubbed some oil on the gasket. I've filled it about 4-5 times. So far no luck.

Any other ideas? And how difficult is it to replace a gasket yourself?

Thanks everyone.
  • Our toilet doesn't hold water unless we pop the lever pretty hard. Needless to say, there is usually no water in it. I've learned to put water in before I use it. Annoying, but even a dealer adjustment didn't improve it.

Mine will leak down if not allowed to snap back all the way on its own. Who's to say that is not part of the original design parameters. I just let mine snap back and it works, if I don't it leaks down.

15 years FT and 10 years RV'ing before that. That's the way we've always done it. No odors, no problems.
  • I found that while in storage the water in the commode drys out therefor seals will dry out and leak just as you have found. For future, I prevent that by putting water in bowl and sealing it by putting saran wrap over the bowl. No me evaporation and no more drying out. I do the same thing in stick and bricks by the way, if we are to be gone from there for long.

Or enough cooking oil to create a thin film covering the entire surface of the water.
  • Thankfully our local rv place had the part in stock. I was able to replace it before our trip this weekend. Seems to all be good now. Wife is very happy to have the bathroom working! I'm glad it didn't take more than one attempt to fix!
  • I had a new gasket on way faster than I could even drive down to the dealer for warranty replacement.
