TRC 34730 BUZZING surge guard

Unit has been rattling something inside for some time. Plugged in on recent trip and a LOUD buzz sounded, unplugged and called TRC. Pretty much tough as out of any warranty. Pulled back plate off and found all 4 screws and washers had backed out of the square D contactor that holds it within the plastic housing. How would you safely check out the Contactor? The Square D is a 8910DPA32. Found some on the net with this number, but they have a V## following.

  • Good to see a few other folks take the repair route as compared to toss in the trash and purchase new

The majority of the issues I have seen with them is water intrusion - cleaning and drying typically gets them back in good shape

Contrary to popular belief they ARE easily repairable

  • Op here. Just saved $250. You have to remove the 6 screws holding the back on. Take a utility knife and cut around the edges to free up the sealant they used. I took the cover off the contractor and found a washer jamed between the contacts. One that had come off the screws that came loose. Put it back together and seems to be working fine now. JB welded the contactor to the case so that won't be coming loose again.
  • Connect a slow-blow 5-amp fuse in series with the phase input leg. This should be resistant enough to inrush yet fail if a catastrophic error is present. Insulate the unit on a piece of plywood or double layer of plastic tarp. Make sure the unit's case has a functioning connection to earth ground.

If it survives the inrush load test. Connect with wire nuts a good load like a 1650 watt resistive load like a heater. Remove 5-amp fuse and allow circuit breaker to sentinel amperage. Leave it on for a half-hour. Turn it off. Disconnect power. Rub your hands all over feeling for hot spots.

Rather elaborate test but I do not like fires or a heavy pall of electrical smoke.
  • How did you get the case open? Did you have to cut it open?
