Triton V10 maintenance

Before our next trip (into the Rockies) we thought we should check on maintenance for the Chinook.

I've researched some around the internet and I find it hard to get apples to apples. Someone might post for a 2000 Chinook...others might have the same engine, but it's in a 2006 F350 pickup---that sort of thing. So I'll post mine as a data point and if anybody would like to weigh in, that would be great.

Ours is built on a 2005 E350 Super Duty Ford with a V10 Triton under the hood. It has 77K miles and we aren't privvy to what maintenance it has had in the past but the coach is in very good condition so we assume it's been at least average. This is at a Dallas (area) Texas Ford dealer.

After looking it over they gave us this estimate.
INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS $661.79
FUEL INJ FLUSH $179.95
DECARB ENGINE $149.95
THROTTLE BODY SERVICE $99.95
REAR AXLE SERVICE $229.95
TRANSMISSION SERVICE $219.95
COOLANT FLUSH $179.95
BRAKE FLUSH $109.95
POWER STEERING FLUSH $109.95
BATTERY SERVICE $29.95

They also charged us $139 for checking the brakes per our request. They said they have 11 mm, which is good.

Totalling that out:

Parts $1,971.34
Labor $139.00
SS $59.95
Tax $162.64
Total $2,332.93

Thoughts, comments, etc.? As I was telling my wife it seems like we're the "or." Like, 100K miles -or- 10 years...well, we don't have that many miles but the Concourse is now 10 years old.

If the battery is original its probably time to change - les schwab will do it or you can do it yourself!

I think the age of the coach is why they are recommending these things. A lot of this stuff is usually done at 100,000 miles.

I'd probably go to a ma and pa shop for maintenance on the ford. I think in the end they are taking advantage of you and the prices are extremely high - especially for TX.

Thanks for the reply! We have a good ma and pa place about two blocks from us. The problem we encountered is that they can't take the size. The Chinook is about 11000 pounds and their lifts won't accomodate it. We got the same answer from another Ford dealer who was closer to us. And a lot of the RV places are busy from a hailstorm we had awhile back, doing fiberglass work. One said really, their focus is fifth wheels, not the chassis mechanicals.

I meant to mention in the OP that I have no relationship with the Ford dealer in question. It's not like I bought a Ford there or anything. So my assumption is that their initial reply is going to be about double or triple what it should be. I.e. they'll give me a shockingly high estimate and hope I bite.

    Couple of thoughts and questions:
    Battery Service...baloney
    Brake Inspection for $140 ...baloney.

When I take our diesel in for service they do this and lots more like check and top off all fluids as part of the basic oil change and filter.

Question: $660 to change spark plugs. WOW what do they have to do, remove the motor?

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm not the most mechanically inclined guy so I can't say for sure about a lot of this stuff.

I got nothing on the battery service: we had a new one put in a few months ago. Um, what could it need?

I think I read somewhere that there's a special tool for taking out the plugs. Whether that's a proprietary Ford tool or something specific for the V10 (didn't the early version have some problem with the plugs breaking?), I don't know, but maybe the average shade tree mechanic doesn't have one in his tool box.

I would have gone with just this if you had asked in advance.

Maybe the throttle body service as mine does accumulate gunk around the butterfly valve.

The rest I would have waited for 100k actual miles.

    Thanks for the post!

Again we haven't agreed to anything yet. I took it for brake inspection, to make sure that was ok. Once in awhile there's some squeal. But since we'll be at higher altitudes I wondered what else we might be taxing.

Proper preventative maintenance is good but in my opinion you let them get away with some serious high dollar extras to the tune of about $500.

The only thing we're on the hook for at the moment, I guess, is that brake inspection---we haven't agreed to anything else yet, and if I'd known they were going to charge that just for checking the brakes...well, but I didn't know, but it will inform future decisions I'm sure.
