Turbo - finding and changing questions

So, looks like something got through my air cleaner and chipped the leading edge on all my turbo blades... praying that none of it settled in my engine... but it's not providing enough boost to help me pull hills very fast.

questions:
1. Where can I find a turbo for my Cummins? Shop here in TC said there are none available from factory or any shop in the USA.

2. How hard is it to change out a turbo? I'm pretty mechanical and think if it's just a R/R type of deal that might not require job specific tools, it'd be something I could do.

Thx for any info.

Larry

  • Thx for the replies. I'll dig it out of the snowbank one more time and take a look underneath. I think I might be able to get the numbers from inside as well, at least that's what Country Coach Tech said.
  • As far as finding it, again, youtube. It's a round thing.
  • call cummins and ask them. once you find which turbo you hae u can search ebay to get pictures and a idea of the assembly.
there are places that rebuilt turbos.

if your blades are not chiped baddly the turbo should work . if you dont have good boost preasure there may be some other issues. the dump valve maybe sticking. thats easy to check.
  • There are lots of made in China turbos available. Do a little Google searching and you will surely find one. You will need the numbers from the plate on the turbo. I have a Chinese turbo on my VW diesel engine in my Samurai toad and it is fine.
  • Try an authorized Cummins shop. Perhaps youtube has a vid on this.

How do you know this? ECM readout? I'm getting codes that say my turbo is failing, but my Cummins 8.3 ISC runs just fine.
