I've been considering this unit for some time now. For $122, it's a really good price for an adjustable voltage, 60 AMP psu. I have read several comments by hoobyists, and it comes highly recommended, (ignoring the one 2-star rating and one 1-star rating on Hobby King)

I will need a 60 amper for charging my bank at certain times of the year, based on Ah usage. So this will fit the bill. But I also need a supplement to my gophert cps1620, for boost, abs, top-off, and EQ'ing two banks at a time, throughout the year.

Well, one cool feature of this unit is the 3 (yes three!) 10a outputs, in addition to the 60a output, which are all power-on-off switchable. And by simply ganging/paralelling these 10a outputs, one can achieve 4 possible current outputs; 10a, 20a, 30a, and 60a. So it could be used to boost/abs charge a variety of sizes of banks. Moreover, set to 5-6% of bank Capacity, it could be used to EQ banks ranging from 200Ah to 600Ah.

Add to this the fact it is voltage adjustable, with a rather useful range of 13.8 - 18 volts. This covers gassing voltages for 6 volt FLA's from -20C to +50C, (thanks, pianotuna), and is well within its operating range for high voltage EQ'ing.

Now, not naming names (((LandYacht, lol))), one could set out to drive this unit with 'its pedal to the metal' so to speak, and blow this sucker up! But with a little care and concern for its actual duty cycle, I think this could be a very good choice in charger.

Just keep in mind, it is not PFC, so it will draw about 12a at the 60a output.

Please, if I'm missing something, please tell!

It's more about setting up a charge system that works for me. At present I have a Peak portable 40 amper that likes to abs charge at over 15.2 volts, with no way of controlling what it does, and a pm-75?-45?-55? that draws more than it should for what it puts out, is unpredictable in its behaviour, and is only somewhat adjustable. Once set up properly, I stand to save several dollars in gas, not pennies, and wear and tear on the genset. Either way, I need a couple new chargers, so I might as well buy something that will actually do its job for a change.

    Can this be paralleled?

Yes... please see my other thread "paralleling made easy?". There seems to be some disagreement as to how easy it is to parallel these sort of psu's, but I'm rather convinced it's a pretty easy task using units that are basically designed to do so. I think maybe it all comes down to how well the voltage can be regulated; by both the OP and the psu.

It's obviously more costly using higher end psu's, but for us less competent in the ways of soldering in diodes and such, it's a rather simple task of hooking up a few cables and dialing in the voltages. What Mex is embarking on building, for example, is much less expensive, but then so is building your own power supply unit from scratch. If I had those skills, I'd be golden.

One thing I've discovered is amps are costly, and adjustable amps even more so. And higher amps often mean going to a 220v ac unit. The mean well rsp-1500-15 is a welcome exception to this rule.

What I really need is a couple units just like this Turnigy, which are 40 ampers, but I can't find anything reasonably priced.

I like the finned case and pusher and puller fan combo.

I don't know if i could Smoke a 60 amp power supply with my relatively small batteries I am unlikely to charge in parallel.

Now gimme a 22$ 350 watt power supply that can do 538 watts, and I'll allow it to smoke itself, in the name of science of course.
I'm working out a recycle project using a PS that delivers 20 amps with adjustable voltage. It has two 80mm fans so may take some time to emit the magic smoke but I'm hoping...:B
  • yeah, it looks like it was well thought out and built... lots of aluminum, too. I'm trying to find specs on the fan cfm and such.

I'm even considering buying two of them, and running them simultaneously on two banks... and keeping the overall input current draw down to say 10a by regulating the amp outputs with the voltage settings. Rarely will both banks be discharged the same amount, so I should be able to tailor each charge to come out to about the same charge times, while also leaving room for the laptop and such.

A nice bonus, like I mentioned, is the three 10a outputs, which can easily be paralleled without any concern for imbalances, seeing as they share the same voltage regulation... it's kinda like having three voltage adjustable,10a psu's in one, without the headaches, as well as a whopping 60 amper! And, of course, two of them could be paralleled for 120a.

  • I also noticed the voltage adjustment looks like a metal screw, as opposed to a plastic one. So I'm thinking one could simply glue a plastic knob with a metal bolt to that metal screw?
