Since it is a small confined area, if the fan overlaps the intake and part of the exhaust the air will be trying to go two directions at once. In that case the air would go nowhere. Then there is also the issue of an external fan being exposed to bumps and scrapes.
I did consider mounting a larger external fan and opening up the opposite side so the air would flow straight through both chambers. As built, the air goes in the lower port, across heat sinks, turns 180 degrees, crosses more heat sinks, and back out the upper port.
