Use a ball bearing fan. A sleeve bearing fan will wear out quickly when oriented horizontally.
FWIW, I've lubricated dozens of muffin fans, sometimes having success. Usually, by the time I've mistreated and not maintained them, they may die. Your situation is just a poor piece of hardware, i.e. the original fan. I've had good luck with the Ever-cool fans. If it's too loud, lower the voltage, you'll still get plenty of air flow through a small case like that.
