As a junior grade World War II in the Pacific history buff I read accounts of resistance in the Philippines and coast watcher islands where young men with strong legs were used to pedal bicycle generators that would power Hallicrafter short wave sets to send spy messages to Australia. I don't know what the transceivers demanded in watts of energy but there are accounts of natives getting so beat after several minutes of hard pedaling they literally fell off the bicycle and another jumped on and kept pedaling. Today's solid state stuff is a lot more efficient but still...
