waste powering a generator!

Back when I was still in High School and Pocket size calculators were called Slide Rules (I'm not kidding.. I still have one) I read some articles not unlike this.
one farmer dug a round pit. basically a Septic tank. put a cover on it that could slide up and down and a barrel on top to weight down with water. Piping to a government surplus electric generator.
He filled the pit with hog ----S**T and let it "Ferment" afor a bit (About a day" and from then on he pumped the stuff into the pit. The weighted cover supplied the proper pressure and the generator ran lights and water pumps and such for the farm.
Free electricity (Well the occasional oil change and such)
