Water heater element problem.

How's everybody doing ? My 6 gal hot water heater quit the other day its a ao smith.
Pulled it out and it had a lot of white scale in the bottom so it put a gallon of vinegar in it and let it set it cleaned up good.
I got a element from ferguson plumping supply same length. When I hooked everything back up its only pulling 5.2 amps but its heating the water.
I checked the package for the number on the element and it says 240 volt 3000 watt I knew it was 3000 watt but the guy said try it. The old one was 120 1500 watt.
I don't understand if its a 240 v its only got 2 screws for wires it looks like a 120 v element. Do yawl think this will work out. http://www.ferguson.com/FergusonSearch/RecordDetails.action?R=PROD_1302367&search=true
Now for the other problem the pressure valve is dripping is there anything I can do for it. Thanks

  • Kelley,

You got it about half right. Those of us with 120V 1500 watt water heaters learned long ago to buy a 240V 6000Watt heater as a replacement (if it will fit the length - measure first). At 120V it will only be 1/4 the power. It will cost more, but as cold as the surface will be, it will last forever and it will also cause way less scale to form.

  • I dought if you have 220 volt in your unit. Need to get 110volt so it will have the proper volts and number of wires. Have heard others say they used 220 volt element but took a long time to heat up. You can also buy an element at Home Depot or others. While heater is MT I would just replace the relief valve. Do not turn on water heater until it is full, or you will be doing it all over again
