water pump maintenance

My water pump is making more noise than normal. I found the pump and need first to clean the screen. I have never done this before so I have a question. I did find the pump and it is installed lower than the water tanks so I was wondering if I need to drain the fresh water tanks before disconnecting the filter housing. I know to turn the pump off, remove any pressure and do not have city water hooked up. But what about my fresh water tanks? Can they have water in them and it won't drain once disconnected?
thanks in advance

Sometimes the way the water pump is mounted makes different noise levels when running... I have a section of RUG under mine...

My water pump has the Valve and hose to stick down into a winterize jug. Sometimes the value switch for this gets bumped and has a small air leak which makes a different noise in the pump...

This is also a good place to check if the freshwater tank is not picking up good - You can switch to the water jug and see how it works picking up water from it... If the motor sounds good doing this might be some sort of blockage towards the fresh water tank.

Mine always makes more noise when the tank is near empty. They are simple to take apart and clean the rubber diaphragm inside. You can check the rubber mounting points also. Having let mine run out of water and left valves open slightly I like to be able to hear mine when it is running to alert me to turn things off.
  • On my rig there is a valve between the water pump/filter and the water tank. Allows me to shut off the water supply to the pump.
