I use one of these Water fill hose attachment but I extend it by inserting a short length of narrower tubing which I super-glued in place.
I bought one of those and 3rd time I used it the tube blew off and went down my fill line into tank.
I have a hose clamp on mine. - LynnmorExplorer II

My camper has a small vent line that runs parallel to the fill hose, and exits through a small brass screen next to the fill port.
Why would they do it any other way?
That vent line will help fill the tank when it rains and when the trailer is washed. The soapy water helps to clean the tank as well. :(
How was this stupid design ever approved for potable water? - mkirschNomad II???

That would be a start. - austinjennaExplorerI bought a few ft section of clear hose and stuck it down the filler tube and put a quick disconnect on the other end so it fills the tank from the bottom up and doesnt shoot out all the time on me.

Now I have a yellow shut off valve :B
OP.........
Fill hose is either kinked or sagging down creating a water trap
OR the vent line from tank is kinked or falling down and not letting air out as water goes into tank - Is this a new issue or the first time? Always been this way?
All I can suggest is to make a longer fill tube attachment. - 1492ModeratorMoved from Forum Technical Support
- Many rigs have a valve in a compartment to fill the fresh water tank when city water hose is connected.
Some have gravity like yours Mockturtle.
OPs profile indicates he has a 1993 Itasca Sunrise.
