It's very possible that one of the batteries has a bad cell (can happen even with new batteries) and it is pulling down the other trying to compensate.
Disconnect and separate batteries from each other and all loads. Then charge each battery separately and measure voltage when fully charged. Then monitor each battery (again, separately) and see if one discharges faster than the other.
Or, you could fully charge both batteries and then take one of the batteries out of the loop and power the trailer with just one to see if the same thing happens. If not, then remove that battery from the load and replace it with the other and see if it discharges.
Two bits says one of the batteries is bad.
