What is This Material ?

Anyone know what this stuff is,...
I find it on the back of some of these volt/amp meters, usually blobbed on to the circuit board to support wires leaving it, etc.
It looks like clear silicone, only clearer. But its much harder than silicone,....can barely mark it w/ a fingernail.
I've seen it used on other stuff too, but CRS. I figure its an epoxy, but maybe not. Could it be "goop"......or is that something else....I've never used it.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Most likely 3M 2 part epoxy like Scotch-Weld or equivalent.
Is it hard as a rock? If yes it's epoxy.
  • Thanks.
Hot melt glue ? That could be it. That's what it looks like. And if not, I think it will work for what I'm thinking. Why din't I think of that ?!!
  • From Asia? Probably a quick setting adhesive to keep components from rattling off the pcb or acting as a strain relief. It could also be hot melt glue. Depends on the production facility and their process.
  • It's a form of Super Glue (made by same company) that is vulcanized (dried and hardened) with a catalyst. Not an epoxy. Vulcanizing with a catalyst means no waiting for it to dry and no delays in manufacturing.
Very commonly used on circuit board esp. where reinforcing components is required, like on aircraft electronics. They also use a lot of pure silicone.

These are the most common adhesives but there are dozens of specialty glues including two part epoxies that are used in application where specific conditions like heat, chemical or vapor conditions exist.

I would touch it with a soldering iron tip, if it melts it is a thermoplastic material like Hot melt glue it will soften. If it is a thermoset mat'l like epoxy it won't.
