What size wire.

The distance from my main electrical box to where I want to install a 30 amp receptacle is approximately 30 feet.
What size wire should I pull for my RV plug?
I also have a 27' shore line on the RV that will be plugged into that recep.

  • Glad you found it useful. I have used it for a while now and it is one of the better ones I have found. Keep in mind that 8 AWG wire is only rated for 40A so if you want to install a 50A as per a PP, you will need 6AWG.

I've been using this Voltage Drop Calculator for it's simplicity but the Wire Size Calculator you've provided is really user friendly as well ... thanks for the link! :)

  • Yes, the difference in the cost of the wire is negligible, go up one or two sizes.

I did this last month and going from size 6 to size 4 cable was 2 cents per foot. I had a 100' run, the upgrade cost me $2.00.

And again, with wire cost being minor, you might even look at going to a 50A outlet in case you ever get a class A. Nothing like having to take out what you already spent good money on to upgrade.

  • #10 is required and is perfectly fine. I would use #8 because the marginal cost is small.
