But then again I followed the Progressive Industries installation instructions which mention nothing about heat, nor mounting inside an enclosed space as in don't do it, and not internet forum opinions and fear mongering.

"Fear mongering"? Give me a break, mount any electronic device in an enclosed space where hot air created can't vent out and over time it's sure to take a toll - common sense. :S

Enclosed is a relative term. Heat transfers out through the walls, so long as it does it at a faster rate than is being generated. As you said, your EMS only gets warm so it doesn't take much transfer to keep even an enclosed space cool enough.
BUT that's just my point - my Progressive EMS-HW30C is not enclosed, it's sitting on a rubber pad on top of the street side wheel well, under the sofa where there is plenty of open space around it and air can move freely. Explains why at most it's only ever warm to the touch, at most.

OTOH, it appears the OP's fried EMS was mounted in a totally enclosed space, with no ability to vent out warm or hot air. As you say, if this device under heavy load generates heat at a faster rate than can be transferred out it's going to get hot and if it does this repeatedly it seems logical to me that could easily shorten the life of the device. It also seems logical to me that if he's going to replace it with another new one it would only make sense to place it in an area where it is vented, offering the greatest chance of long term survival.
