/\ This is pretty much how we all learn, once we start dirt camping and getting off the pedestal. The only difference for me was that I was following when MexWanderelectroluster pointed out that Mega Watt, and the guy that sells it was up the road from me. So, with some minor research and some trepidation, I ordered one. Probably the first here, of many other lurkers. And I reported back. I was NOT afraid, with a Trojan T-1275 scrubber 12v Battery, to push it to 15.0V, off the bat. What I was concerned about was not frying my circuit board on my Dometic refrigerator by going over 15.4V . Trojan documentation used to recommend 15.0V, they have since gotten more conservative.
Keep in mind, this is a Power Supply device... we are implementing it in a different way, as a battery charger. It requires some supervision... you need to do as Mex says and hook it up to a timer, so you only simmer your battery, not over cook it and burn it. You need to do a bit of routine shuffling and take some notes, to see, time wise, what works for you.
I already had the portable solar panel package, 120W worth for a 150Ah battery. A little light in the amps at 6.6 amps/hr, perhaps, but 30 minutes of the Mega WAtt 30amp power supply at 15.0V in the morning, maybe 45, and solar at 15.0v the rest of the day, and 10 days worth of camping... my water level was fine, no losses.
Boondocking /dry camping means you need to improvise. It means you need to do the homework, the research, a couple of weekend trips as test runs. You may get it right the first time, you may not. But, if off the pedestal is how you camp, practice will make perfect. We all go down this path.
