Equalization should start only after the existing charger turns it's back and stops charging (full batteries).
Yes, equalizing is a formula. The object is to drive sulfation from plates back into solution.
Too much amperage serves to "burn" perfectly good and clean areas of the plate. it's actually not burning but I'll save the multi-syllables for some other post.
The actual amperage is not hyper critical but I tend to lean toward the safe (less amperage) side. Damaging plates is irreversible. Multiple issues with that including significant plate warpage, paste shedding. it isn't pretty.
It takes a lot more than one or two excessive percentage points to damage a battery. A lot of excess energy turns to heat, excessive electrolysis of hydrogen and oxygen out of solution (water loss). Too high amperage is a loser from any perspective.
Too low of amperage can range from "It took days and days and days and days" to "It didn't do a damned thing". Not funny when a generator is humming.
