Regarding the pm4b mod:
FYI...the initial voltage at the screws was 14.6+ volts, not 13.6. (this immediately concerned me, and i wasn't surprised when it still kicked into abs)... but now i'm wondering if it will still float charge??? hmmm.
and i may have to re-goop that little screw pot, just to be safe.
update: doesn't look like the float mode works. starting with 12.81v batts, i took one bank down to 1.2a at 14.15 Vabs for over two hours.

BFL:
i just read your post, and i'll have to re-condsider the whole abs to float thing... however, it did start at 14.6+ volts boost on the bench while doing the mod. and i've tried it several times since the mod (on charged batts) and it always switches at the 15 minute mark.
the other thing to consider is the difference in voltages of the three modes. before the mod, there was a difference of just over one volt... 14.67 boost vs. ~ 13.62 abs... and just under half a volt... (13.62 abs vs. ~13.17 float). now there is a difference of 1.05 volts, no matter where i set it (same as boost vs. abs, before mod). so it looks like i'm stuck with two stages, boost and abs.
... the last time i tried it, i had the tri-metric hooked up, and it started at around 40 amps, and quickly dropped to about 10 amps at 15.20v. then it dropped to about 2 amps at 14.15v; but that was on very well charged batts.
i will definitely have to try it on discharged batts. but if it still malfunctions, and doesn't go into boost, then it will actually work to my advantage by going straight into abs.
