not sure if that's the case? i would think one would have to first turn it on to get a reading... but that would be a nice feature. i do like the idea of turning it on/off with a switch rather than with the plug though.

The voltmeter (mine has no light in it) reads whenever the DC cables are on the battery or else if not connected then only when the unit is turned on and so making DC voltage
The red on/off switch lights up when on.
