6 Volt batteries can do this to if you have 4 of them, 2 x 2, series x parallel.
Golf Cart batteries typically have thicker plates and do not heat up to warp the plates. You can get 12 Volt batteries with the same type of plates.
And the idea of one lasting longer than the other is absurd. It comes down to design of the plates and heat dissipation. Typically a 12 V battery that has the same design as a "golf cart" battery cost 2x as much per battery.
