No, they objected to the actual plate that said "ASIMIL8". The "resistance is futile" was on the plate holder. I think that one would be pretty easy to see the guy was referring to a tv show rather than a prejudiced remark.
The one with the guy's last name is a bit more difficult. When you read the plate, all you get is "GRABHER". There is no context to know that he isn't being a sexist jerk. Heck, he may have put his name on there BECAUSE he is a sexist jerk and thinks it's funny.
These type of things always happen. Years ago there was an article about plates that were denied by NY. One guy had requested "IAM6" - they didn't catch on until they saw the wife's request for "IAM9".
There was a semi running around years ago with "ICYRLGS".
