2*6 is equivalent to 215 or 225 AH @12V, depending on model, and can be found for less than $250. It would be difficult to find decent 2*110 AH 12V deep cycle batteries at that price. This is, I think, the main reason for those who use 6V. There are no firm data that under the right treatment 2*6 would last longer.
6V can take more abuse, yes. Reserve amps, i.e. minutes of running it at high current all the way to zero SOC is a form of abuse, a severe one. If your lifestyle inevitably results in abusing batteries often - get 2*6V, they would last a little longer and would also cost cheaper.
