I do wonder if they really get more energy out of those industrial and telephone deep cycle batteries. Or do they last longer because they mostly just stand ready or are a bit oversize for the application. RVs tend to get by on a little less due to weight, space and money limits.

They do but they're physically larger and a little different construction than GC's. You've got more space below the plates for cr@p to build up. That doesn't make GC's lesser batteries IMO though. People do use them in off grid cabins too and they work well. Never heard of a 12V lead acid used in an off grid home of any kind.

They seem to be living up to their cycle ratings for the most part. Quite a few DIY EV car guys get more out them. Also, they seem to be able to handle abuse quite well too as those guys are not easy on theirs (by abuse I mean continuous charge/discharge cycles).
