As usual, it comes down to "it depends". The only off grid homes I've seen use 2 volt cells.
Mexican expat-hippies - those living in offgrid shacks and trailers on cinder blocks - also use L16 and GC. Because they - hippies that is - are cheap.
In 5-10 years I would imagine some of them switching to LiPo because better cycle life and higher usable SOC more than offsets high initial cost. But the majority will stick to 6V for a few decades because, again, they are cheap, and besides, people at that age tend to live in the past. Mexicowanderer is one of rare exceptions :).
They don't like being called hippies though - in Baja they prefer name "nomads". There is even a whole forum there.
