We can't assume the compressor is running because it's hot to the touch. If it's somehow what I'll simply called "stuck" meaning the power's applied but the armature won't turn, probably a bad compressor. And it'll heat up trying to start, power go off on thermal, try again, heat up more, etc. A non-running but hot compressor.
Another possibility: $15 or so Capacitor is bad. Compressor will not start without it. Our Coleman has four devices involved in Start/Run. One's the Fan Run Capacitor 7.5 mfd. That leaves three: Compressor Start Capacitor, Start Capacitor Cut-Out (a Relay or PTCR device) and Compressor Run Capacitor 40 mfd.
Many modern Digital Meters will test Capacitors. Since we seem to have a lot of capacitor problems with central air at home, I bought a spare capacitor to keep around for it. I've since done the same for the RV. I have a spare 40+7.5 (both values in the same "can") and a SUPCO SPP6e start device which replaces Start Cap and Relay.
Our 10-year-old Coleman needed a fan motor and I just installed a new motor. Tried to recondition the original and it didn't work. If it gets to where it needs a Compressor, I'll replace the entire machine. But in the meanwhile I don't want to replace because of an inexpensive capacitor.
