A digital Amp meter will show the millisecond locked amp draw. It will even show that quick normal amp boost draw. IF you have an Intellitec EMS system, THAT display will also show that quick boost or LRA, but you have to be watching and it is quick. I have NEVER seen a non running compressor ever heat up. What I HAVE seen is a defective compressor that has run and then the overload kicks it out and when you go on top you feel the extremely HOT compressor and you might think that it was NOT running before it tripped out.
