Will this charge an AGM battery?

I need to replace the battery in my 2007 Flagstaff 5th wheel. Someone told me to make sure that the converter would charge an AGM battery.

I have a World Friendship Corp converter, mod: WF8955AN. Panel input 120 vac 60Hz 30 amp. Converter input 105-130vac 950 watts. Output 13.6 vdc 55 amp (including charging and load).

I'm sure that makes more sense to just about everyone else but me. The company apparently still makes the same model of converter, but I'm clueless when it comes to the magic of electricity.

Thanks in advance.

You can leave the converter in place but use the PowerMax as a portable and keep it for the next rig too. Just add a set of clamp wires to the output terminals. ( a set of cut off jumper cables works)

Something like this, where the charger is plugged into the gen in the truck bed

This is an interesting idea. We currently don't have a generator, it's further down the purchase list. I assume that this type of setup would work on sites with shore power in place of the generator?

    Again, thanks for the info.

Yes it just needs 120v input. If using a gen you need a big enough gen to run the chosen amps size of the charger. The 60 amper needs a 2000w gen, not a 1000, eg. The 75 amper needs a 2200 and the 100 amper needs a 3000w gen.

I disagree with time2roll that the PD would be good with the AGM, because it does not have adjustable voltage so you can do temperature adjustments for the charging voltage (unless you are always at 77F). The guides to AGM charging stress the importance of temp adjust for their spec voltages.

While the PD would be "close enough" not to kill the AGM it will not be as good in the long haul as using the proper voltages. "It depends" how much diff that would make in your case.

time2roll is known to prefer as little fussing with batteries as possible. The adjustable one is not automatic for adjustments, so it takes more time and effort to use. I don't mind that. Your own "style" would be what counts for that. No free lunch, as usual.
  • Select the battery first then match a charger that provides the battery manufacturer’s charging specifications for bulk, absorption and float.

Save the WFCO and pop it back in before you sell.

Is this in place of or in addition to what's in the trailer now? Most of our camping at the moment is with shore power, but there is one place we go to up on the Blue Ridge Parkway that doesn't have on site facilities.
This would be replacing the WFCO. This makes for easier usage in all conditions.

IIRC the WFCO slides out with two screws and disconnecting the wires. I do not have this PD4655MBA replacement but it says it slides right in for direct replacement.
Best to call Randy to get the details.

I do know the PD charge profile is well suited for an AGM. Will also function better when camped with utility power or plugged in for home storage.

  • Thanks for the information. We are hoping to upgrade the trailer in a year or two, so I'll have to decide if there is any advantage, resale wise, to swithing out the converter.
  • No, becuase it probably won't do 14.x volts long enough to get the amps down to 0.5a/100AH of battery before you drop voltage to Float voltage of 13.x. (you also need an ammeter or battery monitor to see the actual amps to battery, or you can't tell what is going on with an AGM)

You need one of these to do the job. Read the user's manual for how to operate it. How many amps size to get depends on the size of your battery bank. A 60 amper is perfect for about a 220AH bank.

Scroll down to how to recharge an AGM. They are all similar so don't worry if yours isn't a Trojan, this applies---
