Winegard Batwing Antenna Leak

Last night I had a heavy rain storm. This morning I noticed that my bedroom ceiling was a little damp. it was right in the area where the antenna is mounted. I went up and took things apart. The worm gear that raises and lowers the unit did not appear to have any kind of a seal or o-ring. Should there be something at the base or not? Thanks for any info. I have not been able to find a model number to find a definitive parts list. It is mounted on a 1999 Newmar Kountry Star fifth wheel.
  • Make sure the rubber grommet that the cable goes through into the RV is sealed up good with caulking.
  • Have you performed the annual maintenance suggested by Winegard related to lubrication? Not only does their procedure help keep things operating smoothly, but helps prevents leaks.
  • No, i just came upon their suggestions and did perform that this AM. What I read was to spray with silicone lubricant. Do you have any other suggestions?
  • There is an 'O' Ring on the shaft
You have to disassemble from the inside to access it, lube with silicone grease or replace as needed
As stated clean and seal were the cable comes thru
Check for loose screws on the mounting plate and condition of the putty sealant
  • The silicone spray and "gluing" the cable boot back down with some more sealant has always taken care of any water problems we've had. Raising and lowering the antenna makes the cable move and therefore it likes to loosen the cable boot so the rain gets in.

You did notice that besides using the silicone spray on the gear mechanism, there's a hole to shot some inside of?

    Bill
  • The antenna on my KZ Spree was installed poorly. The caulking around the base did not adhere to the base, the putty tape sealing strip was decomposing, two mounting screws were stripped, the quad seal on the shaft was missing and the cable boot stood away from the base.

I removed the whole mess and started over. The photo is after one year and only five times in the rain. The trailer is stored indoors when not in use.
