The problem with your thinking is that the lower VHF channels now longer exist. Channels 2 through 7 are no longer used. The real RF signals for these channels are usually found between 19 and 37.
The Wingman antenna is needed for better reception of UHF channels were almost all channels are transmitted.
People who claim the Wingman did not help live too far from the transmitters, down in a valley, or in forests, where only a higher antenna tower or additional amplification can help to pull in signals.
Also; the quality of television used makes a bid difference in how well each set will do in making use of weak signals.
