It operates on 12v and has a portable 12v source if needed(haven't used).
We ran a lighter adapter plug to the nearest light to plug into the RV 12v.
It also has a magnetic base that we mounted above the bed. It lets the light hang down and can be rotated, adjusted or removed simply by pulling it off the magnetic base.
They are pretty quiet.
I recommend them.
