Xantrex Freedom 458 20D tripping

Doug is correct. The transfer switch in the 458 20D is rated at 30amps, BUT that 30amps is shared across the charger, output #1 and output #2. Each of the two outputs is protected by a 20amp breaker. (15/15, 15/20 or 20/20 amp output breakers are options avail.)

The OP is simply overloading the second circuit.

The post before this has it correct. He HAS 30 amp pass thru power, but it is a dual output Inverter (2 - 20 amp breakers). But as the other poster stated, you CANNOT run MORE than 20 amps on either circuit or the Inverter breaker will trip. I believe that is what the OP is doing---running high amp appliances that total over 20 amps. Doug

Good grief- this has nothing to do with the Inverter*. As OnaQuest said- you are overloading the 20 amp circuit. If you had no Inverter, the circuit breaker would still trip. The inverter should have a 30 amp feed, with 2 20 amp outputs. You simply cannot load more than 20 amps on a 20 amp circuit and expect it to work.
1200 watts for a griddle, 1200 watts for a coffee maker, 350 watts for the refrigerator. Add it up.



*Disclaimer- it could be that the inverter has magnetic circuit breakers, which will actually trip at 20 amps, rather than the normal breakers which can be abused a bit before tripping)

Wow, I just read your last post. I didn't realize your inverter only had 20amp pass through capabilities (I thought you had 30). That is why it is tripping so easily.

I don't seem to have a choice. Like another commenter said, AC runs through the inverter while on shore power. Inverter will only turn off when not plugged in to shore power.

Me thinks you have a mistake about your Inverter, OR, your Inverter is malfunctioning
1. Freedom Inverter/CHARGERS do NOT need to be "turned on" to charge or to pass thru Shore/APU 120 power. It is automatic anytime 120 shore/APU is supplied to the RV
2. The ONLY time you need to TURN ON the Inverter is A. You want to have INVERTER supplied 120 to the load appliances(No Shore or APU 120 available) OR B. You leave the Inverter side ON, but it is in "wait" mode and IF you have a 120 power interruption from Shore/APU you do NOT lose any clock settings or have power interruption causing a Inverter side appliance to stop.
3. If you CANNOT turn the Inverter OFF, then you need to disconnect 120 power AND disconnect the positive side battery cable at the Inverter for 10 minutes to reset the Inverter.
4. Do you have a remote panel for your Inverter? How old is the Inverter?
5. Last, you have (usually) on your model Inverter, 2 -- 120 breakers. Depending on the model freedom, it can be a dual 15/15 or a dual 15/20 amp breaker. I do not believe the Freedom series offered a dual 20/20. So, Which breaker is tripping? The 15 or the 20? The 20 is usually powering the M/W side. But if only 1 breaker is tripping and it is the 15, you can swap the load from the 15 to the 20 to prevent the tripping on hi load operation. Doug

I do not have to turn on the inverter when plugged in to shore power. It is in wait mode but AC power still runs through it. My inverter does have 2 20 amp circuit breakers. It is the top one that always trips. I will trip the breaker tonight and see how many and what outlets still work. From my recollection, it seems that most of them pass through that top circuit. I know for sure that there is one in the bedroom does not run through the inverter. It does have a remote comtrol panel. The inverter is 10 years old. What is the "M/W" side?

OP, do as you normally do and when they stop working find an outlet that's still working. Plug the coffee maker in there and then go reset the breaker. There is nothing wrong with your inverter. You cannot run those two high amp items on the same circuit. You can have more the one outlet on the same circuit.

Your inverter is rated for 30a pass through amperage while on shore power. You not only have your two appliances drawing on that circuit but the charging load for the inverter/charger. It also depends on how your inverter/charger is wired. Best bet as others have said is plug into a non pass through inverter circuit.

Hi pugs,

The inverter has a transfer switch. Personally I'd rather not have it automatically picking up the loads as that can lead to a dead house battery bank.
