Xantrex Freedom 458 remote panel issues

Looking for some suggestions from some people familiar with the inner workings of the Xantrex Freedom 458.

Remote panel is no longer working. I did verify that the remote panel was functional by connecting to a like Xantrex Freedom 458, it functions properly. When I connect to My Freedom 458 the charge LED will light for about 30 seconds and then go out. None of the buttons/LED's will function. The Xantrex will indeed invert when disconnected from shore power and will passthru 120VAC and charge the batteries when connected to shore power. I also tried using other "proper" cables between the Xantrex and remote panel.
It appears the communications between the board and Xantrex 458 has failed.
Any suggestions? Is it possible to replace just the communications board?
Thanks All
  • Calling Xantrex will result in no help. The company was sold years ago. The Freedom is on it way out. No real tech support is available,

Proper Xantrex to remote panel cable. The very cable that ships with the remote panel. Not just any cable.

I indeed connected THAT other 458 panel to my 458 and had the same results, not working.

Just like you I also have a "test cable". I have installed a number of inverters Doug, just never opened one up.
On my Discovery the remote cable runs directly from the 458 to the panel.

My Onan Energy Command 30 communicates with the AC's and will start the generator if I choose. It also monitors the house battery and will start the generator if I configure it to do so. Not connected to the 458 in any way.

    Thanks for your reply.
  • I would like to know what you mean by " Proper cables". Those cables are NOT phone type cables. Also, you stated you connected your remote to another 458 and it worked correctly. Can you try connecting THAT other 458 remote to your 458 to see if it operates?. I have never seen a Problem like you have without it being the Remote cable that was either cut/chewed or had corroded ends. Remember, depending on the systems installed the remote cable may NOT run direct from the Inverter straight to the remote panel. It may go thru a Auto Genstart module also or a AC control board module. What I have is a test cable(not a phone cable) that I use to connect the remote direct to the Inverter to verify if the problem is the cable. Doug
  • You are asking the wrong audience. Call Xantrex and explain your situation. They are very helpful and friendly.
