I agree with the previous answers (except for the one about Xantrex Tech Support being worth a shot). If the unit has run well for seven years--5 years out of warrantee--and is only now throwing overtemp codes, then something is wrong with the air path.
Since a new one is another $1500, I would throw ten bucks at a new fan, once the unit was cleaned up. Also, nothing wrong with an external fan, drawing hot air OUT of the unit.
As for the small compartment, that certainly isn't helping. I have mine installed in a large cabinet and the fan comes on at the drop of a hat. Perhaps a vent fan could be added to the basement? If the unit still works, but overheats, then every little bit might help.
