? on upgrading trailer tires from 14 inch to 15 inch rims

I have a 2008 Starcraft 2700BH. It came with Duro Radial ST DS 2100 IN 205/75/R14 LOAD C. GVWR of trailer is 7100 lbs. The current tires are rated for 1760 lbs at 50psi. Which would give me 3520 per axle or 7040 GVWR. I have 60 pound difference in allowable weight. Based on those calculations, I am pretty close to max. Would it be feasible to upgrade tire and rim to a 205/75/R15 tire/rim combo. By that choice, i can get a Load range D type of tire and not have to worry about weight. Would I have to have the axels realigned to a bigger tire. or does anybody make a tire in 205/75/R14 LOAD D range.

ps. tongue weight is 584

axles: LCI axels 3500 Lbs. ( Lippert Corp)

  • Keep in mind if you are considering the Kumho's that they are a metric size tire. A 195R14 Kumho is about the same size a 205/75/14 ST tire. If you have plenty of room go with the bigger (evidently you do if you are considering 15"). Remember to keep at least 1" between tires.
I have the Kumho's on another trailer and I am very happy with them.
Will your 14" rims hold 60-65 PSI?
  • A little further comment on all this, I would default to my normal comments that taking the truck and trailer to a scale is the only way to know what a person is really dealing with. Anything else is just guessing.

Having said that, I looked up the OP's trailer and see that it has an advertised dry weight of approx 4400 pounds.....so "if we were to guess", real world, ready to go camp with pretty much dry tanks ( fresh, gray, black ), I am going to say it's likely between 5500 and 5900 or so, with probably between 650 and 800 tongue weight.

But again, a half hour spent at the CAT scale doing three passes is where I would want to start, so that honest, educated numbers could be applied to the idea of tire/wheel/suspension loads.

GVWR is 7100 lbs and even 22.5" semi tires won't raise it. Moving up in capacity 10-15 percent at the most above the axle rating just gives a bit more reserve capacity for the tires. Higher rated tires/wheels does nothing for the trailers suspension/brakes/etc.

No need to realign the axles for just a tire swap.
The 15" D in a ST205/75-15 tire would be a good upgrade on 3500 lb axles.
Their are 15" LT out here that would be the best upgrade for long term reliability all day long at any speed on any the interstate.
  • as usual , gmw photos is dead on .
The kumho 857 load range D in an LT rated tire has a capacity of 2271 # on the sidewall .
It fits your current wheels and wheel wells .
You will not do much better in an LT rating on the sidewall if you go to a 15 inch wheel .
Also at Tire Rack check out size 225/70 R 15 in an LT rated tire .
One is a Goodyear G26 ? , the other is a Vanco 2 in the 15 inch size above .
If I recall correctly they are placarded about 2450 # or so on an LT scale .
    No need for you .
Do the Kumho 857 in the 2271 # placarded rating .

Yes, Kumho makes a load range D tire for that size application. Radial 857

Here is one online retailer that carries them:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Radial+857&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=0R4857&tab=Sizes
  • If you go for 15" rims, then buy a set 6" wide and able to carry 80lb of air. Then you could run 225 75 15 E rated tires, assuming you have the clearance.
  • Well you could go up to 15", but Maxxis makes a 14" in a your size that is a much better performer than the Duro ST. Your rig's tires are properly matched to your axles and since tongue weight accounts for 15% of your rig's GVWR, the Maxxis ST tires will easily handle the rest.
  • First you need to check axle weight capacity. You will probably need to upgrade axles, springs and shackles, brakes, rims and tires.

If you are going to do it, do it right. Your equipment is only as strong as the weakest link.
  • If they will fit inside the wheel wells with some room to spare for movement you can go from 14 to 15".

Keep in mind that when you are computing your tires, load ratings and GVWR of your rig...some of the weight (around 13%) is transferred to your tow vehicle in the form of tongue weigh.
