Fixing the problem is possible by do-it-yourself if you have the tools and the moxy to attempt.
This is a link to a pretty good video on how to remove the fuel tank to gain access to the pump. I think this is a gas Dodge, but the process is the same. It shows how to disconnect the filler line, breather hose, the electrical plug and the fuel line. Also, how to support the tank, remove the straps, and even wash everything.
There is an aftermarket kit that relocates the breather tube on the diesel tank to take advantage of the 3+ gallon air space the tank has for fuel expansion. I am planning to install my kit some day, so I'm not having to 'burp' the last 3 gallons into my tank. Should be a good time to clean the pump/screen and sender units too.
Sure wish I had a lift as they show in the video though. Ha!
