'07 Lincoln Town Car Towing

I'm interested to pull a small TT with my Town Car. Maybe something up to 2500lbs.

On paper, the car has a 2000 lb restriction, but I suspect that's a paper regulation designed to put more people in trucks.

It's a 4.6L V8 with 239 HP, 287 ft lbs torque, 4 wheel disc brakes. It is a body on frame, so hitch mounting is easy.

I DO understand the tow cap spec, but I'm wondering if anyone is specifically towing using a late model panther platform?

Thanks

I highly doubt that any Panther ever had a 5000 lb tow rating !

They were rated for 5,000 pounds through the 1995 model year. Besides the lowered tow rating, the only changes were a new steering wheel and the aforementioned spare tire change. But you are correct that an external transmission cooler was recommended for towing.

I found a 2004 Ford Towing Guide. It said maximum tow was 1500 lbs and the recommended an aftermarket transmission cooler. I'll bet the Police Interceptor model had a upgrade radiator.

Anything over 2000 lbs, I would want a weight distribution hitch and electric brakes. I would also add rear air spring (bags) and the best shocks you can find.

Thanks for the good comments folks!

I have a lot of experience towing with 'Burbs, and big vans, but the laat time I tried a sedan I got my arse whooped. A guy in Canada advise I could tow my Airstream Flying CLoud 25 with a Chrysler 300 V6. Spent a bucket load of money on a custom hitch, and the rig almost killed me on our first outing when it over heated up a 4% grade and then the brakes wouldn't stop the whole rig on the way down. My wife brained me over that fiasco.

    Being careful this time.

Send your wife to find that guy in Canada.

Sounds like good old Andy T at Can-Am RV, trying to convince people that the best tow vehicle for a 3 axle Airstream was not an F250, but rather a front wheel drive V6 sedan. I don't care if I can do a slalom course at 80 mph, I'd much rather be able to back up a hill without smoking the transmission.

  • I suspect you’d disregard any Ford capacity limits that interfered with your plans.

CarMax says 1500 pound trailer limit. See https://www.carmax.com/research/lincoln/town-car/2007/features-specs
  • Same here. I'd have zero hesitation with that setup either. I tow 2,000 pounds with my Focus without issue.

A lot of enthusiasts speculate the change was due to the donut spare becoming standard. I would certainly carry a full-size spare when towing.
  • The 07 has a different rear suspension than the earlier town cars. They lowered the rating then, prior to that it was 5000lbs. Personally I think it was to keep the truck sales up. I wouldn't hesitate at even 3500lbs.
