1 ton truck and AF 990?

I am currently hauling my AF 990 on my 1999 F-250 super cab 7.3 with mods being E rated tires and wheels, Big Wig sway bars front and rear, air bags and Rancho 9000 shocks. It seems like quite a load on the truck. When fully loaded the camper weighs in the neighborhood of 5,000# Also with the camper on the truck I am afraid to tow my 20' boat.
Now to the question. Could I make this work with a SRW 1 ton truck or would I have to go to a DRW truck?
Anyone out there doing this with a 1 ton SRW?
Thinking about getting a used late model or new truck.
Thanks
John
  • John- Here are my thoughts..I have a 990 on order - should be in here in six weeks or so then I can tell you better. There are those that tote a 990 on a single wheel 3500 but most will have some mods like Stable Loads, anti sway bar, possibly air bags. You can see my truck in my signature. I am running a dually and happy to be doing so. My NL is probably 1,000 pounds lighter than the AF and I didn't care how it drove/rode with just an anti sway bar. I experienced a world of difference with lower stable loads. I would prefer to avoid air bags but time will tell. My dually is not my daily driver but I could do it easily enough since I alter ready own it. If I was going the daily driver route- I would go 3500 single wheel and likely look at a lighter weight camper.
  • If a DRW will work for you, you'd probably be better off. You could make some changes to the current truck including 19.5s, new shocks, stableloads or bump stops, etc, but it would be cheaper to get a DRW.
  • My boss carries that camper and tows his boat with 14 F350 diesel srw cc long bed. He has Big Wig sway bar and air bags. He says he is going drw soon. Apparently, he is not comfortable with the set up.
  • With that weight, how are you not over your tire capacity now?

    DRW is a no brainer.
