Smooth shifting has little to do with the number of gears a transmission has to choose from.  Smaller steps do help, but in the end is all about managing the torque during the transition which means controlling the shift element 
(clutches and bands).
And don't expect >10 speed transmission any time soon.  They have likely hit the point of "diminishing returns" already.
What will be interesting to see if they apply this technology to 3/4 ton and up trucks !
