In the old days when in my 20's...a close ratio with more gears was to die for...
Understand these why of these new higher number of gears gear boxes, but
at some point...it will become overly complex with more potential
failure points...plus the higher cost to fix and diag
The reason behind a close ratio gear box for any ICE is to keep the ICE in it's
sweet torque/HP range
But...the OEMs are engineering ICE's with much better torque/HP curves
(flatter, higher torque/HP and extended range)...so am wondering if
these very high number of gears more marketing than keeping the IC in
it's torque/HP sweet range...sounding more like the days when folks
were bragging about the numbers of cup holders...or wheel dia's...:B
PS...designing a gear box has many compromises...one the force on the
gear tooth face. So depending on the tranny to get that lower ratio
(higher numeric) might have the diff gear face PSI too high...so did
they widen the gear teeth? or are they still okay on gear tooth face PSI?
