1/2 TON QUESTION

Of all the 1/2 ton TV's out there (2009 or newer), which has the highest tow rating and load capacity? Will be using 1/2 ton as second vehicle year round with only round trip to Fla on flat I-95 for smaller 5th wheel to snowbird. Camp on!
  • The OP didn't ask about a 3/4 ton which is another topic and just clutters up his OP so most folks stick with the original OP question.
Then we have others who want to argue why get a 3/4 ton when the one ton SRW is just 700 bucks more . Then the DRW crowd jumps in with their why not just get a DRW. So where does it stop. Many times the OP gets disgusted and doesn't come back which I don't blame them.

For every negative thing you have had happen to you with your 1/2 ton truck there are thousands more out here who enjoy their 1/2 ton truck performance with what ever they towed or carried. I know I did and still do.
  • The F150 HD does have the highest, by far. They are very rare to find new, let alone used.

As for regular half tons, Ford and GM have the highest payloads for crew cab and regular cabs. Ram/Tundra down about 150-200 pounds for the same equipment. Check the driver's door for as equipped payload as you kick the tires.

If this is a second vehicle, why not a 3/4 ton? They are similarly priced on the used market, the base models have all the equipment needed for RV towing, lots of payload, and a good ride when loaded up. Finding a half ton with the right options used can be a chore, while all 3/4 tons have the minimum desired for RV towing. Does it have the towing package? Axle ratio? As a second vehicle the % of unloaded miles is smaller, thus the compromise of half ton ride and fuel economy is not as important as a daily driver and TV.
  • Maybe I'm out of line here but there are a lot of posts of what can a half ton truck haul/pull. If the restrictions are a question, why not throw a couple bucks more considering the many years investment and get a 3/4 ton. Present and future worries done. I never expected that my faithful half tons would never be able to handle any boat I would ever want. Well, who knows what kind of a boat a stupid person would buy? Poor ol' half tons, one barfed tranny fluid and the other screamed through the rear end. So entered the F-350 as in my sig. All's quiet and easy going. I'm not saying everyone is dumb enough to buy a boat their truck can't handle but in the life of RVing or any fun endeavor, the tow truck is probably the most important and expensive part of the investment so why not invest in the future. The F-350 looked pretty silly pulling the last 24' trailer but looks in style with the boat or toy hauler.. IMO..

8200 crew cab, xlt, full options. Passengers are always an negative number for any GVWR.

    Sticker on my door
  • Without a doubt the F150 8200 GVWR package with 4800 RAWR with payloads up to 3050 lbs depending on cab selection.

Do not confuse this package with the max tow which can be a 7700 GVWR and small 4050 RAWR which is limited to around 2000 lbs depending on cab model.

Looks like the F150 Ecoboost and the 6.2 both show a 11300 lb tow rating depending on truck selection.

HD is the operative word here ..not max tow

    8,200# GVWR as in Max/Max
  • F-150 has the highest payload and highest tow rating. Payload ranges to as high as 3050 lb( reg cab)- to around 2200- lb Crew cab when you order the hd payload package. Max tow rating is 11300 lb with maximum options
  • HD Ford F150 Ecoboost

HD is the operative word here ..not max tow
