Several items in play with the last post.....IF the 5.3 had the trailer towing package, then there was NO way it got better mileage than the 6.2, but if it had the 3.42 or 3.08 rear, then yes it may have gotten equal or better mileage. We now have 8K miles on our 6.2 NHT and the mileage just keeps improving, using 87 octane. Started at under 16 average and now over 18 average. Our 05 5.3 with the trailer towing package NEVER got more than 16 average and that was measured for 160K miles. Also makes a huge difference where you use the truck, sea level vs higher altitude. 87 octane to us, is the same as 91 to flatlanders. Also, the temptation to get it on is much higher with the 6.2L as it is with any hot high HP engine and that has a big input into mileage. It is widely known that the 6.2L will get better mileage than the 5.3L, so if your brothers truck is getting poor mileage, he, or his 6.2 has the problem, not the 5.3
