16-18' Travel Trailer for 4 - WHO Has the BEST Floorplan

16-18' Travel Trailer for 4 - WHO Has the BEST Floorplan - title says it all.

Looking to those who have spent some real time in their 16' trailer and what makes it functional.

Thinking Kitchen and Bath on one end and bunked sleeping on the other with a couch/dinette in the center that might convert to a queen?

Help me out,

TIA,
  • OK looked at a few how is this?

    Any problems?

Seems to handle everything - what am I missing?

    Thanks,
  • We spent 2 years using an "Aspen Trail 15BH" as a family of 4. This included a 42 night trip out west.

We really enjoyed that camper! It was great for weekend trips. Better than our current trailer.

We ended up keeping the dinette as a bed all the time. The converting wasn't worth it unless we had a real reason.

The biggest hassle was not having a spot to sit other than a bed. Even a dinette bench is not good enough for a rainy day. 42 nights without an upholstered piece of furniture was ROUGH!

If we could have two trailers, we'd probably chose the smaller for weekend trips.
  • The only answer at this point is: "it depends". It depends on what your needs/wants are.

You said 4 people, bunks and a possible queen dinette. Put the kids to bed, then you and spouse stay at the dinette playing cards, or whatever, then you go to bed when you want?

How much are you looking/willing to spend? What will you tow it with? 18' generally can be towed with a half-ton, or a reasonably-sized SUV.

    Campgrounds, dry camping, hookups, boondocking?

I really like a TrailManor 2417KB, as it is 18' from coupler to rear bumper while towing, but opens to 24' of living space. The 2417KB has a king bed in back, a double bed in front, and a dinette that converts to a twin. Depending on size of kids, they could sleet feet-to-head on the double. People say they are pricey, but they are a great design.

Some TM 2417s have a 40-gallon fresh tank, 6 gal cassette toilet, 30 gallon gray tank, 6 cu ft fridge. There is a wet bath, 2-burner stove, lots of storage for a small trailer.
  • Any floor plan can work. It is all about what YOU want. Look at Rpod. They have several decent plans that might fit your needs.
  • Our 18ft had a queen across the back, with a gaucho type bed above. It was a 1959 Field and Stream custom built for the owner of the company.

Toilet room/shower(wet room) was next with a closet opposite.

Kitchen are and then up front was the dinette converts to bed with another gaucho bed above.

Very cozy... the only place to sit was at the dinette or queen bed. Not comfortable for long periods of time.

I would choose a floorplan where the beds had to be made up each night...this provides more flexible seating areas. Maybe a toyhauler where the garage area with drop down beds could be used as a living room in daytime and a sleeping area at night.
