1997 GMC K2500 Suburban - no brakes in tow harness

Hi to all,

A couple months ago we purchased a 1997 GMC K2500 Suburban 7.4L to use as a TV. After fixing several small things let go by previous owners it was time this weekend to replace the old/original 7-pin RV plug at the rear. The old wires at the plug were broken and in bad shape so I removed all old wiring to get back to factory wiring which is still in fine shape.

This vehicle has the Z82 HD tow pkg so it has the 7-wire harness routed down the left side to the rear. I carefully spliced in new wires (exactly where the old ones had been) and was happy to find that the original brake controller stilled worked fine through the blue wire in the harness. Other wires in the harness were good too: lights, power, ground and turn signals.

The puzzling thing to me is that the two wires in that 7-wire tow harness that are said to have stoplamp+turnsignal signals, only have turnsignal signals on this vehicle. The brake lights are fine at the rear of vehicle and cruise control disconnects normally so brake switch at brake pedal seems fine. But no brake signals in the tow harness? The two wires in question are:
5) Dark Green – Right turn signal and stop lamp
6) Yellow – Left turn signal and stop lamp

Neither of these wires have a brake signal but both wires have solid and strong turn signals. Ideas ??

Any ideas and help greatly appreciated!

Many thanks
Marty
  • I had a similar problem with my 98 3500. I took a trip to the shop and pulling the steering wheel to correct the problem. The Mechanic now curses every time he sees me coming.
  • Thanks roverdover! Wow, instead of pulling the steering wheel, the rear light harnesses might be looking better and better, ha ha..

I don't know if this is connected (no pun intended) with the problem or not, but this vehicle had an alarm system at one time and there are several wires spliced under the dash...
