2000 XJ Cherokee Dinghy

Am looking at a 2000 4x4 Cherokee Classic to be used as a tow dinghy. There is no manual. Checking online sounds like it is easy to set up for 4 wheels down. Set transfer case in neutral, turn key to unlock steering wheel, shift the transmission into park. is the transmission gear correct? Why have in park instead of neutral? Are there any other issues to be concerned about?
  • Thanks to all for the helpful information. We are fairly new to RVing, and will be towing the Cherokee on a winter trip to Death Valley. And plan to make good use of it.
  • Advice above is correct, and you have chosen a great toad vehicle. Probably my favorite out of all of them that I've used over the years! Divorce forced sale, or I'd still have it.
  • You understand correctly. I have a 2000 Cherokee that I pull behind the Truck Camper sometimes. Just make sure to unlock the steering column. I got distracted once while reconnecting first turn tires start to screech.:S
  • Park stops the internal components of the transmission from turning. Failure to do so will cause internal damage due to no lubrication as the transmission oil pump is on the input shaft.
