I agree with both of your comments. I took the time to learn about the 6.0L scouring the internet and forums and even PM'ing some of the cert diesel techs for their opinions/experiences. but it was a steep learning curve.
Go to any powerstroke forum and there are numerous threads of "won't start" and "stranded in (random state)" If the OP is willing to do some serious reading up and finds a really good diesel tech then for the price I think it is a manageable risk. In my case the cost of worn/bad sensors, harnesses and accessories pushed the price up way more than the gaskets and ARP head studs. Be prepared to replace small parts that can cause problems later.
A lot also depends on the quality of the maintenance. Like anything else there is a good way to do things and a not so good way. Many of the better bullet proofing shops claim most of their customers already had bulletproofing done by a shop/tech who didn't use the right procedures and/or parts.
My personal plan was to just address the weak points but I did a few tweaks to increase the power and efficiency. I am quite pleased with its performance and efficiency at this point. If money wasn't an object I would have bought new but I had a limited budget and needed an SUV so this is the route I took.

Good Luck OP.. many have been well served with the 6.0 PSD ... many have experienced failures at the most inappropriate time...
Educate yourself more and more about this motor and enjoy the ride!
Thanks!

Yep you only have a one in six chance of killing your self playing Russian roulette!
That might be a decent statement for an experienced diesel owner, who can turn a wrench, but not a diesel newbie!
