If you got it for 17k with all the work done, I say you got a good deal. The fact that all the major issues have been addressed will help you. I got my 2006 6.0 with 120k on it for 16k thanks to the view the 6.0 has just over 18 months ago. I did spend 4k taking care of the known issues with it. For that 4k I pulled the heads, had them checked, new head gaskets, studs, new oil cooler, upgraded EGR cooler from bullet proof well overbuilt from stock, new water pump (due to leak at input shaft), new thermostat, and a coolant filter.
I expect to have to replace the original FICM at some point, but then all of the other engines have their gremlins. The 7.3, the GM duramax, even the summins ISB, each has a unique issue that eventually you have to address. The biggest issue with the 6.0 has and will continue to be the EGR cooler system and general misdiagnosis, which my friends shop sees regularly when a customer pulls up after dropping thousands elsewhere and still having problems.
