- jus2shyExplorerCan't speak for other trucks, but the newest Rams have 2 water separators. The engine fuel filter has two layers of media to slow down fuel flow and capture water. I also have a chassis fuel/water separator. Currently I'm draining both monthly and looking for any water, but I have yet to find any.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerFor the guys that say they "never find a trace of water" have you ever noticed dark spots around your filter? If you have that's water trapped in the filter. All diesel and gasoline has water in it, just usually not enough to cause a problem.
My truck no longer has the WIF sensor as I removed the old filter assembly when I installed my Air Dog system. I just drain the water separator about every three months and yes I usually get about a tablespoon out of it each time.
Don - reddwarExplorerWhen we got our 07 5.9 was told every third fill up to drain. I did that until I was talking to a mechanic & he said if there was any water in the fuel, the pump would mix it with the diesel & the filter was not going to separate much water out.
red - GreentreenaExplorerIt is suppose to be done every month as per the manual. I don't bother anymore but I guess it really only take one bad tank of fuel. I just regularly change the fuel filter ever 35ooo km. Never had the water in fuel light come on.
I have heard of issues: my coworker bought some diesel from station in the middle of no where. He said his Dmax had blue smoke after. It went away with fuel cleaner, new filter and fresh diesel. - jus2shyExplorerRAM still installs a short vinyl tube on there. Drips fuel all over the front cross member. There isn't much room down there on 2013 3500's or 2014 and up RAMs. I actually just ripped off the factory hose (just slipped right off) went to home depot and put a 2 foot section on there along with a velcro strap so I can tuck it up and keep the tube clean and then bring it down when performing maintenance and checking for water. According to my owner's manual, says that it should be checked monthly.

Same here
Little hint though, a garden hose section of about 12" will drain it out directly into a Mason jar without getting all over your front diff :B
Rick,
Sounds like a personal problem... :B

- michael8rcExplorerNewer trucks are more sensitive to dirt and water than the old trucks. My 98 Dodge has never shown any water. I change the filter after 10,000 miles. I am sure that this would not be good for a new truck with all the yew bells and whistles in their engines.
