2007 Heartland Trailrunner Battery Drain / Reverse Polarity

I have two issues on Father-in-laws 2007 Trailrunner.
1. It has a pretty good battery drain. Will drain battery after 3 days or so .04 amps. Will get small spark hooking up battery lead. I have pulled all fuses and will get a .02 drop when I pull the 15 amp WH (water heater) fuse.

2. When running off shore power and I turn on the red lit switch. I can hear the inverter get a drain and the 12vdc lights will flicker. It also reverses the polarity on all the outlets. Neutral hot reversal.

I am quite savvy with electricity

* I tested the shore power outlet it is good.

I need to figure out what this red lit switch is on the panel. Hopefully this image posts of the panel underneath the sink. I didn't have a fox and hound with me to ring out the lines as I was only visiting for the afternoon. I know it is not the water heater that is to the switch to the right

Hoping someone had a similar issue to prepare when I go back down to troubleshoot further.

Thanks Dustin

  • My total guess on the red switch is it powers an inverter.

Your dads trailer has a standard converter/charger that runs when he is on shore power. There is also an inverter somewhere in the trailer and it is powered by the red switch. The 120v side if the inverter is also wired backwards so the polarity changes when you turn on the switch. A simple test would be to turn off the switch and unplug shore power. Check the outlets. Now with the shore power still disconnected turn the switch on and see if you get 120V at the outlets.

The battery drain is pretty common but usually takes about a week or two to drain. The smoke detector, the refrigerator board, the water heater, all draw 12v power when they are on. It's also possible that if your father does have a separate inverter it is powering the converter charger. Basically it might be trying to use the battery power to charge the battery.
  • Battery disconnect does NOT completely disconnect the battery, LP,CO, radio stay on. We can not see the picture. Wh would have a red light. Pump would have a red light. Don't know what switch your talking about but it can not revers polarity on 12 volt or 120 volts.
  • I’ve never heard of a trailer that old having an inverter. What is a red lit switch? The inverter gets a drain?
How old is the battery and what type battery is it? Normally the shore power has nothing to do with the 12v except for the converter trying to charge the battery.
This sounds like a defective battery. Could you be overthinking/trying too hard?
  • That switch hanging from the box is not a factory install. It was added by an owner so it could be anything. You need to do some detective work to figure it out.
  • Thanks for all the posts and info. Will keep troubleshooting and figure it out and let you know.
